Week 1-- Two Cultures
As a student who majors in Applied Mathematics, this is the first time I take a class which belongs to the North campus. My pre-major and major requisites actually inhibits me from the whole different cultures. As C.P. snow divided the rich and the poor into two groups, science and arts live in two completely distinct universe. The common boundary of them is where the singularity emerges from.
Furthermore, the separation of arts and science build my respect and curiosity towards those people who major in humanities which stand on the opposite of my major. For example, one of my roommates majors in Linguistics. Although we share one bedroom, we still live in two worlds at UCLA. The commonly used app for her is Word, but, for me, is Xcode. Moreover, the arts are not just a part of school curriculum as insignificant areas of study but are a vital part of education (Importance of Arts in the Education").
However, there should be more encouragements and courses for students to chase achievements in their unfamiliar areas. We should try to be an expert in our own fields but not to be an ignorant person in other fields. Thus, the third culture, in-between one, faces its new era.

回复删除I understand the barrier you share with your roommate as I have a similar situation as well. Me being a psychology major and one of my roommates being an economics major we are both majoring in something different but share similar interests. One of them being film, we both enjoy watching movies and therefore we take film courses. I am all for learning about subjects outside of my field because I want to learn as much as possible and be able to carry it on into adulthood.
