Event 5: Sound + Science Symposium 2.0

On May 3rd, I went to Sound+Science Symposium 2.0. This two-day event shows humans' explorations on all kinds of vibrations and their relation to arts, music and other fields.

To my surprise, a certain organization on this event actually helps artists to utilize technology then develops their artworks. Creativity+Technology = Enterprise is a leading non-profit organization in America, which creates new tools and experiment in new sustainable models for artists practice.  In addition, this organization works as an executor to let more creation and  presentations use new and evolving technology. And the director of this program shows several artworks from their sponsored artists to help audience understand better.

Among all of those artworks which combines arts and technology, I was specifically impressed by two of them.

The first one is called the signs of life designed by Marco Donnarumma and Heidi Boisvert. As the combination of Biotech and Arts, this artwork uses dancers' muscles and blood flow via biophysical sensors that capture sound waves to generate music. As the tester adjusts his hand's position, the music changes its melody and pitch correspondingly. I think that it is better if inventors can tell which motion of hands relates to which kind of pitch and physiological reasons behind that.

The second one is Arthur Elsenaar's artwork, face shift.
This artist can use his facial muscles to produce different music from diverse instruments. This application utilizes computer-controlled facial capturer to recognize the motion of organs on face. If you notice it comes to the real application, it is fascinating that all members of the instrumental ensemble will move facial organs to produce music instead of playing instruments.
Furthermore, I am a member of the ethnomusicology ensemble at UCLA. If we can use this evolving technology during our concert, it will be really convenient for us to perform without heavy instruments. That will be a real application of the mix of technology and arts being used in our daily lives.
